    - festival about the modern Middle East
    12 August to 20 September 2006

The Images of the Middle East Festival focuses on contemporary culture and the current changes which are taking place in the Middle East.

The programme of Images of the Middle East includes an information/education programme which takes place from 2004 to 2007, and a Cultural Festival in Copenhagen and throughout major Danish cities, from August 12 to September 20 2006.

"Identity in the process of change" is the central theme. Artists from 22 countries in the Middle East are presented in the festival.

The Bridge - Literary Images from the Middle East
The acclaimed anthology has lately received much attention in the Danish media. Unfortunately, the attention has not been centred on the texts, but on the fact that no Israeli author is represented in the book. In this connection, several media have accused DCCD of succumbing to censorship from sponsors. This is not the case. Since several obvious misunderstandings about the origin and financial backing of the book have been published in the media, DCCD finds it necessary to give a detailed account of the production and publication of the book. Images of the Middle East and the situation in Lebanon
The bombings of Beirut’s airport and the main roads of Lebanon and the closing of Lebanon’s airways and seaways will possibly also make it difficult for several Lebanese artists and intellectuals to travel to Denmark for the Images of the Middle East festival. The war in Lebanon can also cause an unwillingness to participate in Images of the Middle East on behalf of other Arab artists and intellectuals since many Arabs find it difficult to celebrate when other Arabs are suffering. DCCD understands and recognizes the seriousness of the situation. When DCCD and the partners still wish to continue the last preparations for the festival, it is because we feel that the festival is even more important now than ever. Read more...

Images of the Middle East is more important than ever
When it was launched, Images of the Middle East was an important cultural event. In the course of these past months, it has become even more important. Art, culture, and dialogue should play an important role in the breaking down of notions and prejudices and can help increase intercultural understanding. It is going to be an exiting year with focus on Middle Eastern culture.

The Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation for the Dialogue between Cultures has launched the 'Dialogue 21 Campaign'. Young people between 18 and 25 years of age are encouraged to exchange questions, answers, and suggestions in order to improve dialogue across the Mediterranean. Further information about the requirements for participation, etc can be found on www.euromedalex.org under Dialogue 21.
