Konference: New Media in the Middle East
31. oktober -1. november
En konference om den rolle som nye mellemøstlige medier spiller såvel i de mellemøstlige samfund, som i den mellemøstlige diaspora i Vesten. Der vil bl.a. blive fokuseret på de politiske implikationer af satelitkanalerne Al Jazeera og Al Arabiya.
Oplægsholderne vil komme fra både Europa, USA og Mellemøsten og der vil blandt andre deltage repræsentanter fra de nævnte tv-stationer samt fra større mellemøstlige dagblade.
Konferencen arrangeres af Center for Mellemøststudier ved Syddansk Universitet i samarbejde med Images of the Middle East
Desuden afholdes der debatarrangement på Vollsmose bibliotek den 8. nov.

The main objective of the conference is to discuss the impact on political processes of the new media like Al Jazeera, Al Arabiya and, in general, the media coverage of the Middle East in connection with the debate about democracy in the region. Another objective is to discuss the role of the new media in connection with the Arab diaspora outside the Middle East. The conference will bring together scholars, people from the media etc. from the Middle East as well as from Europe and USA.
The conference will be open for the public, but participation requires confirmed registration no later than by October 14 - 2005. Please note that the number of participants will be limited and that admission to the conference is held only after receiving confirmation of registration. Bring a print of the confirmation mail.
The participation fee is DKr. 150,00. This includes coffee and lunch both days. The fee for participation in both the conference and the conference dinner Monday night is DKr. 250,00. Please inform the conference secretariat on registration if you wish to take part in the conference dinner.

21.00 Arabian-English Rap Music by Zaki Youssef
Zaki Yussef, who was born in Egypt, is 24 years old. Zaki has a comprehensive musical background and has played with the avant-garde emsemble Ether among others. He has been compared to the Danish hip hop group Outlandish but defines his own attitude as more experimental and less polished. His debut album mixes hip hop beats, Arab inspired surprises, and rap lyrics in Arabic, Spanish, English, and Danish. The result is well worth listening to!
